Beginning songwriters should be aware that the advances they receive are an advance against future royalties. The publisher won’t pay any additional royalties from your songs until the advance has been recouped. Songwriters who have or who are considering a music publishing deal should know that not all advance arrangements are created equal. Consult with an attorney or a qualified professional you trust to help you negotiate the best possible advance.

2. Slovenly Records, an international imprint, is raising funds for both Puerto Rico and Mexico. On the island, donations go to El Departamento de la Comida. They’re working to rebuild their restaurant space as well as support several sustainable food projects. (Hurricane Maria wiped out 80 percent of Puerto Rico’s agricultural production.) Donations of $10 or more qualify for the chance to win passes to various festivals.

Ethan Hein is a Doctoral Fellow in Music Education at New York University. He teaches music technology, production and education at NYU and Montclair State University. With the NYU Music Experience Design Lab, Ethan has taken a leadership role in the creation of new technologies for learning and expression, most notably the Groove Pizza. He is the instructor of the free Soundfly course series called Theory for Producers. He maintains a widely-followed and influential blog, and has written for various publications, including Slate, Quartz, and NewMusicBox.

Nea community grants

Pizzetti wrote several books, mostly of musical criticism (he co-founded a journal of modern music, Dissonanza in 1914), but notably also a biography of Niccolò Paganini. His music is lush, diverse in terms of what he asks of his orchestral players, and sincere. It fits well with the times, being not all that dissimilar to the beauty and drama of Claude Debussy and Vaughan Williams; and it yet fits even more perfectly into the history of Italian sacred music and operatic canon. Financially-savvy songwriters have been taking advantage of this loophole by quietly selling a portion of their catalogs. In addition to receiving a big lump sum payment taxed at half the rate, these songwriters are diversifying to hedge against industry turmoil, inflation, and declining royalties. It’s something worth checking out!
