Had a hard week at work? The Anodyne is the place to grab a beer with friends on a Friday or Saturday night. Just be careful you don’t have too many drinks, because you have to climb a flight of stairs to get in and out of this place. But the climb is totally worth it because Anodyne sits at the top of a historic downtown building that overlooks Central Avenue, the main street running through downtown. You can people-watch and take in some of the best views of the city from this spot. But what we really love, is that they have an iPod console that allows patrons to choose the music — think jukebox for the younger generation. I believe this may the only bar where Joy Division and Garth Brooks might be played in the playlist shuffle.

Hopefully you have some ideas for crafting your own narrative now. Remember, your narrative doesn’t need to be groundbreaking, and even if you think you have nothing to say, you can find a story to share.

Lastly, check out how the beat here often delays how it enters. In the first verse, it’s delayed by four bars, the chorus has a little hiccup in bar two, and the V2 delays by two bars. It’s a creative technique.

“God’s Plan”: Man, the chords in this loop were hard to identify. Not only because the notes here don’t conform to standard A-440 tuning (it’s all about 20 cents sharp of G major), but because they start out as ninth chords whose upper halves are louder and more timbre-distinct than their lower, arpeggio-happy halves. It’s almost like it’s better explained not as “9-chords,” but as “an Em stacked on top of an Am,” and then “a D chord stacked on a G chord.” This “separation” thinking is enhanced by the low-muffled organ patch playing the Am and G, and the more trebly organ patch playing the Em and D.

In his case, that’s a lot of pop-punk and a variety of indie rock. Yes, Sawyer has developed a keen appreciation for The Gaslight Anthem, The Front Bottoms, and The Arkells. Never let it be said that he doesn’t have taste!

In summing up (ha!), phase is not just a potential problem in audio engineering. It’s actually one of the essential components of sound alteration. We’ve only touched on some of the most basic theory and techniques here. It will serve a budding engineer well to dive even deeper.

It’s amazing how you can play something perfectly 20 times in a row and then the moment someone switches on a mic, it all goes down the drain. One of the ways we dealt with this was by taking particularly challenging parts of songs and either breaking them into multiple tracks or separating them out and then re-splicing them together after. It takes all the pressure off getting one perfect take, start to finish.
